The Tale of the Trademark
Words. They are the most powerful and influential form of communication known to man. They have the ability to evoke feelings, memories and in the case of branding and advertising, can make a person associate them with a certain brand or product.
Trademark cases are always prevalent in major court cases with some of the most well known disputes being over the late Elvis Presley and BrewDog naming one of their beers after him, or Apple Corps and Apple computers, with Steve Jobs describing the whole saga as a 'long and winding road' (good one, Steve). One you may not have heard about though was Land Rover and a business named Twisted Automotive, based in Coventry. Twisted were using the name 'LR Motors' for its showroom, where it modifies LandRovers by upgrading them.
Jaguar LandRover contested that the name 'LR Motors' was too similar to the name 'JLR', which the brand is often shortened to. The battle resulted in the court throwing out the case and stating that Jaguar LandRover has never used the name 'LR' name for any part of its business. The owner of Twisted claimed that they had won the case despite the 'bullying tactics' of Jaguar LandRover.
